What is CNC Turning?

CNC turning is an alternative method to your average CNC machining. It is not the cutting tool that rotates in this CNC turning method, but rather the material you are shaping. It is held by a lathe, and slowly rotated to get a symmetrical shape. The most common example is a chess pawn, which is identical about the axis of revolution, no matter which angle you hold it at.

Although most turned items usually only use a single axis of revolution, you can incorporate multiple axis to allow for more flexibility.

How Is It Done?

In order to program a CNC turning machine, you need a code. This code can be generated using a CAD/CAM program on the computer, and then transferred to the machine using a flash drive or a floppy drive. It can be difficult if you don’t know how the program works, and for small items you need exact and precise measurements.
